Welcome to Tallo Alpacas

My involvement with alpacas began in 1997. Tallo’s future is with proven females and the use of quality studs, with the vision of breeding wonderful coloured alpaca with fabulous fleece.

With the genetics of Purrumbete Inti, ILR Peruvian Snowmaster, ILR Snowmass Peruvian Escobar, Peruvian Senator,  ILR Snowmass Grey Legend and ILR NGG Bentley, Regal House Mr Darcy and Janannie Park Voltaire and now the new stud Pacofino Hotspur … Tallo is heading in the right direction.

Why “Tallo”?

This is going to sound a bit quirky, but I came to the name of Tallo because of my love of animals and a time when I was a Norwegian Elkhound owner and breeder.

What’s a Norwegian Elkhound?Norwegian_Elkhound

The breed name "Norwegian Elkhound" is a direct translation from its original Norwegian name "Norsk Elghund," meaning "Norwegian moose dog". (European settlers mistakenly called the North American cousin of the red deer an elk, when in fact in the Norwegian language the term elk or elg means moose). Despite its name in America, it is not a hound dog; the Elkhound does not hunt like a hound dog nor is it directly related to hounds.  The breed's goal in the hunt is to hold the moose at bay - jumping in and out towards the moose - until the hunter can arrive to deal with it.

The original Tallo

The name Tallo is famous in the world of Norsk Elghund, it was the kennel name of respected Norwegian Breeder/Judge Olav P. Campbell. A man who had such a positive, world-wide influence on the evolution of the Norsk Elghund one of the most ancient Northern Spitz breeds of dog and the National Dog of Norway.

The Elkhound has served as a hunter, guardian, herder, and defender. In a land of subzero temperatures, deep snow, thick forests, and rugged mountains, only the hardiest of the breeds could evolve to perform the variety of jobs at which the Elkhound excels. Its Spitz courage is probably a by-product or residue of the fact that a significant number of them were used to hunt bear and other large game, like moose. The Norwegian Elkhound was first presented at a dog exhibition in Norway in 1877.

Elkhounds are no longer in my life after 16 years, but their spirit travels with me and is reflected in the name for my stud as it represents, for me, the pursuit of excellence
